Shortcut Korean support Guide

  • Shortcut Korean Guide

    • Introduction

The Shortcut Korean language learning site has been designed for you to learn conversational Korean in the quickest time possible. You will learn the 2000 most commonly used Korean words in a conversational context. You will also learn to speak in the most common conversational situations. This will ensure that you can start speaking Korean right away and not waste time learning things that you would never even use in a real-life setting.

    • Selecting your Korean course

After you register your Shortcut Korean account, you will be able to select a course to begin your study. We recommend that all students follow the courses in sequential order (Beginner to Intermediate Level).

If you do not know how to read Korean or are not confident in pronouncing the Korean sounds, then it is important that you complete the Hangeul course first. This will teach you how to read Korean, how to pronounce the Korean characters correctly and introduce you to some basic Korean vocabulary.

Once you have completed the Hangeul Course, you will then want to commence our beginner level course (or higher). In each course, there are 14 chapters where you will learn a total of 504 new vocabulary words and 28 conversational dialogues with grammar notes.

Note: If you are having trouble reading the Korean script, you need to complete the Hangul course again, or at least until you feel confident in your ability to read Korean. Shortcut Korean does not use Romanisation because it has proven to be more detrimental than beneficial in learning the complexities of Korean pronunciation.

    • Using the Shortcut Korean web application

After you have selected your course, you will then commence your Korean learning.

Choose the chapter that you wish to study. We recommend that you commence with Chapter 1 and continue in sequential order up to Chapter 14. Clicking on the "Start Next Lesson" button will take you to your current lesson. Clicking on "My Review" will allow you to review words that you have previously studied.

To see what words and study topics are in a given topic click on the chapter and it will display the Korean words (36 per chapter) and phrases that will be learned in that chapter.

    • Chapter Overview Page

After selecting the chapter that you wish to study, you will be taken to the chapter overview page. It is important that you are using one of the latest web browsers (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox) and ensure that your pop-up blocker is set to allow Shortcut Korean. If you are using an old browser or have not disabled popup blocker, it may not allow you view the Chapter Overview page.

Each chapter is broken up into lessons. For example a chapter may have 8 lessons, including Lesson 1-1, Lesson 1-2, Lesson 1-3 etc. The blue boxes denote Vocabulary lessons, while the green boxes denote conversational/listening lessons. When you complete a lesson, it will be given a yellow tick icon and all the words/phrases that you learned will be added to "My Review" for later revision so that you don't forget. Of course, it is highly recommended that you complete each lesson at least two times, this will ensure a higher retention of the learned vocabulary.

  • Lesson Options

There are also some simple lesson options that you can adjust.

Rocket Korean Premium Interactive Audio Lesson

Words per Lesson: This sets the number of words you learn per Vocabulary lesson. By default this is set to 6. You can change it to 3 or 9, depending on if you want quicker or longer lessons. Changing this setting will then alter the number of lessons. There will be fewer lessons the higher your word selection is and vice versa.

Typing Task: You can disable typing tasks if your goal does not involve learning how to write and type in Korean. We strongly recommend that you keep this option enabled, as it will help you tremendously in your Korean learning.

Choosing default English: In our conversational lessons you can choose to view a "Literal English" translation or "normal English" translation. Literal English will translate Korean exactly as it is written. This is extremely useful for learning grammar and understanding the structure of Korean. Of course, if you find it too difficult to understand the literal English translations, you can change it to normal English.

Maximum review items per lesson: This is an option that is currently undergoing development, and not functioning yet.

  • Vocabulary Lessons

    • Learning vocab screen

Rocket Korean Premium Interactive Audio Lesson

In Vocabulary lessons, you will learn a set of new Korean words. It is important that you repeat the word aloud at least five times. We have provided a normal speed and slow motion version of the word. Listening to the slow-motion version will allow you to perfect your pronunciation and pick up any subtleties that could not be heard at normal speed.

    • Keyboard screen

The next screen will then require you to practice typing the word using our onscreen keyboard (or a physical Korean Keyboard if you have one installed). It is recommended that you practice typing the word at least 5 times to ensure you will remember it.

    • Examples screen

After this, you will then view two examples of the word in a sentence. This will allow you to understand how to use the word and its context. You can also add the example sentence to "My Review" to practice it later on.

    • Multiple Choice Questions

Now that you have learned the words, you will be tested with multiple choice questions.

There are three types of multiple choice questions that you will have to answer:

      • Korean to English

      • English to Korean

      • Listening

You will be asked whether you recall a given word and then be given 5 options to chose from. One of the options is also "None of the above". This prevents users from simply guessing the word.

  • Conversation Lessons

    • Overview

There are two conversational lessons per chapter. In these lessons you will use the words that you have learned in your vocabulary lessons in a real life conversation. You will see two or three people in a real life dialogue. You will then learn each line of the dialogue and the associated grammar point.

Rocket Korean Premium Interactive Audio Lesson

It is very important that as you learn each line of dialogue, that you orally repeat the words aloud. This will ensure that you are more comfortable when speaking and will help you with your pronunciation. Be sure to listen to the slow motion version as well to ensure you get the pronunciation just right.

You will also notice that after you learn a line of dialogue, you will then be shown a pattern sentence. The pattern sentence is basically the same kind of sentence but with a word or two changed. This teaches you to form you own sentences with the vocabulary that you have learned. It prevents students from merely parroting the sentences and lets you see how to actually form sentences on your own.

    • Literal English and normal English options

You can also change the English translation to literal English. Literal English will translate Korean exactly as it is written. This is extremely useful for learning grammar and understanding the structure of Korean. It is actually recommended that you study the sentences using the literal English translation. This will help you to become more natural when you speak Korean.

    • Conversational test questions

After you gone through the learning stage of the lesson, you will then be tested on your knowledge. You will be given about 10 seconds to see if you recall a given line of dialogue. After the timer expires, you will then be asked if you correctly answered. If you did not answer correctly, you will taken back to relearn the line of dialogue again.

    • Culture Note

At the end of the lesson you will then be able to read about an important Korean cultural note.
